Isla Roatan, Honduras

The island of Roatan is located 30 miles off the north coast of Honduras atop the worlds second largest coral reef. Due to the reef attracting many fish, and is world known for scuba diving. Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands at about 48 miles long, and less than 5 miles at its widest point. The island has a number of beaches, all of which are public. Originally an English colony, and later ceded to Honduras, Roatan has a mixture of english and spanish speaking natives. Roatan also has two cruise ship ports, making it a top cruise destination.

In recent years the island has experienced a lot of development and has a number of resorts along with more rustic accommodation as well. The western side of the island is the most populated and where most tourists stay, and the eastern side is more remote and isolated. Roatan has a warm climate with daytime temperatures between 80-90 year round.

This was the third of four total stops on our cruise. Our ship docked at Mahogany Bay, near the French Harbor. Mahogany Bay has an onsite beach, shops, and several activities, so cruise visitors like me don’t have to experience the rest of the island. The beach is nice and the setting amazingly surreal, with 2 rusting shipwrecks within view.

With no pre-planned activities, i was determined to find the sweet reggae music I had seen signs for. I’m a hardcore music lover, but i’ve always at a soft spot for reggae music. For me to have the opportunity to hear it live in a culture that helped create the very sound i love, was a must for me. Especially with nothing pressing on my schedule for the day. Along with the great music came great food and drinks on the beach. The onsite shops where also great, though i’m sure prices were higher than usual when the cruise ship docked. Regardless, i picked up some cool gifts for the family without breaking the bank.  The island of Roatan was a great stop on the trip, and just the recharge i needed. If you give me a sandy beach, reggae music and a cold drink, i guarantee i’ll make the most of it.
